Basement Jaxx and Robyn

This song is not new, but it’s awesome. Basement Jaxx are great, and so is Robyn (as always), in their collab song Hey U from 2006’s Crazy Itch Radio.

It’s so abstract; it’s so crazy; I love it. I’m kind of obsessed with the tubas and dogs barking in the opening. I’m really not in a writer mood, but I wanted to share.

Hot Chip & Dip

Hi folks!
I’m back like that sock you thought the dryer stole forever. :)

I recommend you do find this now:
* Hot Chip * Made In The Dark (Japanese Edition)
This feels like the music I would want to write for myself. I’d say it’s quirky, bouncy, fun but is done seriously well. Most importantly it makes me wanna dance. In fact, “Good Times” Event #1 for this song happened last night….
Picture me in the kitchen, iPod stereo bumpin’, and I’m gettin’ mean on some cucumbers. Add some yogurt, dill, and smooth dance moves and then we have some tzatziki con “Wrestlers”. OMG yumm-o.

Oh! Bonus points goes to the Japanese edition for this track:

Michael Jackson

The reality of Michael Jackson’s death just sunk in for me. It took a while for it to hit me… the fact that Michael Jackson is dead. And it really sucks. I’m having a hard time expressing myself about this.

I grew up listening to Michael Jackson music, as many people of my generation have. Every Christmas, my mom and I decorated the tree while listening to the Jackson 5 Christmas album. I remember when my mom bought the Dangerous cassette and listened to it all the time. I won’t soon forget his awesome music videos and humanitarian efforts.

My condolences to his family and all the people who have been touched by his music. Rest in peace, Michael Jackson.

Dan Black

I should just rename this blog to Mark’s Weekly Song Addictions and Other People’s Random One-time Posts. I sure am looking forward to seeing what other songs Mishellular, Teri, and Christian are going to post, aren’t you? ;-)

So, I’m addicted to a song… again. It seems lately that I’ve been getting hooked on a new song every week. This week’s song is Symphonies by Dan Black. I’ve had it stuck in my head on repeat for the past two days now.

Dan Black, who was the lead singer of the band The Servant, is tearing up the music blogosphere with songs from his forthcoming album (Un is due to drop in the U.K. July 13, not sure of a U.S. release date). I originally heard the Passion Pit Remix of Symphonies, and liked it a lot. Then I happened upon the original, and it was true love.

There are several reasons why I’m hopelessly in love with this song. The sampled orchestras, the Umbrella-esque beats, and the lyrics…

The song, in a way, reminds me of the songs I used to write when I was a teenager. How it talks about dreaming of something better, something more. It has a cinematic, epic feel to it. And I’m addicted to movies, which makes the song… and music video… even more awesome.

It reminds me of my adolescent dreams of packing a guitar and running away and somehow finding a way to become famous. While I think I have given up those grandiose dreams (somewhat) for more realistic, tangible ones, there is nothing wrong with having a fantasy of what you’d like your life to be. At the same time, I’m not sure I have given up my fantasies. Give me symphonies. Give me more than the life I see.

Petra Haden

I’m pretty sure I gasped when I saw the amazing Toyota Prius commercial featuring Petra Haden covering the Bellamy Brothers’ song Let Your Love Flow. Not only are the visuals awesome (colors… everywhere! and the scenery is made of people!), but Petra’s a cappella rendition is, quite simply, incredible. I think it was the song that initially got me excited about this commercial. I didn’t realize that the clouds and grass were actually human beings until I had seen the commercial for the second time. It really didn’t matter to me, because I wanted the song so bad. So I googled it, figured out who the singer was, but couldn’t find a damn MP3 for the song, which made for a sad Mark.

That’s when I discovered and fell in love with the amazingness of Petra Haden.

THEN… a few days ago… Let Your Love Flow was released by Toyota as an MP3… FREAKIN’ FINALLY! I can try to describe the a cappella amazingness that is Petra’s music, but I’d fail. Just listen.

From The Bottom Of My Heart

Dear Lady Gaga,

I know that I’m more than a little late in doing so, but I would hate myself forever if I didn’t say this:

Thank You.

Thank you for being our champion. Thank you for being our pioneer so that when we have momentary flashes of sobriety and become afraid that people are laughing at us, rather than with us, we can think back and remember that you were there first and you let us know that it’s gonna be ok.

It’s alright everyone! It is alright. When you come out of a blackout to realize that all of your friends left an hour ago and you have completely forgotten where you live, you no longer have to get scared. Just keep it cool and you have the opportunity to make new friends, friends who’s names will not even matter by morning!

Last year, when you found yourself with your feet planted firmly on your neighbor’s dining room table, your hips gyrating away to “Love in this Club,” nobody even noticed when you leaned over and got sick in that pot of fake ficus. They were all too busy noticing what a great dancer you were!

When you were kicked awake the next morning after passing out on the soft linoleum floor of the kitchen, there was your phone a few feet away, sitting in a pool of something unidentifiable and sticky. See? You thought it was lost forever. Not so, it always works out in the end.

So thank you, Lady Gaga, for reassuring us that we don’t look stupid when we run into our ex, nearly knocking him over, and ask drunkenly if it would be cool if we got back together for the night. That’s not a look of revulsion on his face. He’s proud of us for being so forward about what we want. Thank you, Lady Gaga, patron saint of balls-to-the-wall skanks.

Love,

Chrispy

New Author: Christian

I met Christian a few weeks ago… at the beach. Yeah, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. ;-)

Since then, we’ve started a nice friendship… but it really seems like it’s been longer than a few weeks. A couple months, maybe? In any case, I’m really glad I met him. He’s a sweet guy with an awesome taste in music.

I like him a lot. I’m sure you will, too.

St. Vincent

I can’t get this damn song out of my head! I love it. I’m obsessed.

St. Vincent is Annie Clark, who reminds me, ironically enough, of an old acting teacher I had during the “I’m going to be a famous actor” era of my life. This song is beautiful. It’s lush and at the same time barren in its simple rhythm of electric guitars. A little bit of old-school showtunes sound with alternative rock guitars. She’s seriously like a Julie Andrews / PJ Harvey hybrid pixie. I kind of love her.

Me = poor. Somebody buy me her albums: the latest, Actor, and 2007’s Marry Me, because I seriously want all of her stuff. Hehe.

And people keep saying the Actor Out of Work video is weird. Mishellular says that her face is disturbing. I think the video is awesome.

Peaches

I kind of didn’t like this song when I first heard it the other day. Then I listened to it again and changed my mind. Now I like it a lot.

In the single “Talk to Me” for her newest album (I Feel Cream), Peaches‘ lyrics aren’t as naughty as I’m used to. They don’t have the “suckin’ on my titty” hyped up sexuality. There’s a certain kind of subtle maturity in her plea: talk to me.

The beats are awesome (as usual), and the bassline is killer. Check it out and enjoy.

New Author: Mishellular

The eclectroniclash family is growing again! Will it ever stop? I hope not!

Meet Mishellular, aka Michelle aka Miss Fabulous. I met her a little more than a year ago through our friend / her roommate Willis (who I’m hoping will also become a contributor for the site). Mishellular and I always seem to like the same kind of music, and we’re always like, “Hey, have you heard this song yet? No? Listen!” I wasn’t surprised when she said yes to my invitation to be a writer for the site.

Get excited!
